How to Get Started in Dental Hygiene
The path into dental hygiene is more structured than many entry-level career paths, but that structure works in your favor.
If you've read this far and dental hygiene sounds like the right fit, here's a practical roadmap for getting from where you are now to your first day as a licensed RDH.
Start with an honest self-assessment. Dental hygiene involves working in close physical proximity to patients' mouths for 7-8 hours a day. You'll see blood, calculus, inflamed tissue, and the occasional abscess. The work is repetitive - you're performing variations of the same procedures hundreds of times per month. And your hands, wrists, neck, and back will take a beating over time. None of this should be a dealbreaker, but go in with your eyes open. Shadow a hygienist for a full day before committing to the education.
Knock out prerequisites efficiently. Community colleges are the most cost-effective path for prerequisites like anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and microbiology. If you're working, many of these courses are available as evening or online sections. Plan to spend about a year on prerequisites if you're starting from zero science coursework.
